Conceptual Arts

Conceptual art serves the purpose of making the observer think, and to illustrate a concept, rather than simply creating an object. The idea of the piece is the most important aspect.

Before the 20th century, art was mainly paintings, however in 1913, French - American painter and sculptor Marcel DuChamp started to use objects as art, rather than paintings. First of all he used a bicycle wheel, not because it was beautiful, but because the bicycle made him think. He also went on to use other things such as urinals and later created white surface objects.

Martin Creed challenged art's mainstream concepts when he created a box containing a screwed up ball of paper. He created the piece claiming it was something he enjoyed and wanted to do. It makes the viewer think, as the piece, if being viewed by someone with no knowledge of art, may appear meaningless and trivial, however looking in more depth, the piece could have very philosophical meanings.
